Celebrating Patsy Matsu Mink: The Woman Who Changed the Game

Hey Sports Bra family 👋,

Today, we're embarking on a special journey together. We're introducing our FIRST-EVER LEGACY PATCH, a tribute to a trailblazer who helped revolutionize the world of sports for women.

Let me tell you about Patsy Matsu Mink, the reason we can cheer for our favorite women athletes today.

Patsy was more than a politician. She was a visionary, a fighter, and a game-changer. Born in 1927 on the island of Maui, Patsy faced discrimination and barriers, yet she never let that dim her spirit. She fought her way through, becoming the first woman of color elected to Congress. But her most enduring legacy? Title IX.

This law, which prohibits gender discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance, has been a game-changer in leveling the playing field for women athletes.

But why is Patsy the perfect recipient for our first "Legacy Patch"? It's simple: her impact echoes in every women's sports event we screen, in every young athlete's dream, and in the very existence of spaces like The Sports Bra.

Each time you step into The Sports Bra, you're stepping into a dream that Patsy helped make possible. From the cheers that fill the air during a Portland Thorns game to the community events that bring us together, Patsy's spirit is here. She's in the stories you share, in the hopes you voice, and in the dreams you chase.

As you stop by and bite into Aunt Tina's wings, or raise a glass of our Title IX cocktail, remember Patsy. Remember the battles she fought so that women could play, lead, and inspire on the sports field.

Now, we want want to hear from you. How has Title IX impacted your life or the lives of women you admire? What Legacy Patch would you love to see in our next series? Drop your thoughts in the comments!

As we honor Patsy with our first Legacy Patch, let's also honor her by continuing to support and uplift each other, in sports and beyond.

See you soon,

The Sports Bra Crew

Have you considered patches in honor of Marianne Vos and Ann Trason? They are arguable the greatest athletes in their respective sports, including both men and women.
